Are you in need of better housing? This refers to the condition of current housing (overcrowding, crime, mold, disrepair) as well as rent cost burden (the cost of rent exceeding 30% of your monthly income).

To calculate the rent cost burden, follow this example:

  • Gross Monthly Income: $4,000

  • Monthly Rent: $1,500

  • Calculation: ($1,500 ÷ $4,000) x 100 = 37.5%

  • In this case, this person faces a rent cost burden because their rent costs exceed 30% of their monthly income.

Can you afford a mortgage of about $700-$800 per month? The exact payment depends upon the size of the house and the cost of property taxes and homeowners' insurance.
