12th Starkville Habitat Home Complete Amid Pandemic

March 30, 2021 by Amanda Henry

Local Starkville residents, Santana Turnipseed and Chadrick Robinson, were gifted a home amid the Coronavirus pandemic.

Family poses with Cpt. Matt Savage (home is named after Savage), Joel Young, Habitat Construction Manager John, and two of their children.

After waiting patiently, the Starkville couple received their first home after the virus disrupted the construction schedule by 3 months. Santana and Chadrick have put in a tremendous amount of effort and dedication into their new home before it was even finished. The pair have moved into a 5-bedroom, 2-bath home and their long-standing friends could not be happier and proud of the happy couple.

Miesha Edwards, personal friend of the family, has known Santana and Chadrick for more than 15 years and was nothing short of “proud” for the family’s “opportunity to grow with a nice roof over their heads.” Edwards says that Santana and Chadrick serve as “energetic and motivational individuals for people who are looking for a home and trying to provide for their family.” Friends describe Turnipseed and Robinson as loving, hands-on with their children, and dedicated.

Here at Habitat for Humanity, we believe that God’s children should have a decent place to live and we could not be more happy for Santana and Chadrick. This is the largest home ever constructed by the Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity organization. The new home is sure to be enough room for the 7 person household. We were very ecstatic that this 12th Maroon Edition home was supported by MSU and we look forward to the next home. Congratulations again to Santana Turnipseed and Chadrick Robinson. MSU President, Dr. Mark E. Keenum, was in attendance of the home dedication ceremony and spoke a few words of encouragement and a blessing over the new couple’s home.

Make a work of art for charity!

Over the course of 4 workshops, participants will be guided to create pieces of art and/or upcycled functional items using objects gathered from the Starkville Habitat for Humanity ReStore. These new pieces will then be sold by The Idea Shop in downtown Starkville during a separate event with sales going to benefit the Starkville Habitat For Humanity organization. The pieces are to be sold at a charity event hosted by The Idea Shop on May 8, 2021. Your participation would be greatly appreciated and will benefit so many members of our community! Come out and support, and you just might be surprised by what you can create.

MLK Day of Service

January 20, 2021 by Amanda Henry

We have been extremely grateful to have volunteers come and finish work on the houses we are building here in Starkville. Our volunteers were eager to help with the beginning steps of building a new home while others were excited to put the finishing touches on another house. Our staffers were up bright and early to start the process which requires much attention to detail in order to ensure that the volunteers will be safe. The Martin Luther King Junior (MLK) Day of Service takes place annually and lasts for three consecutive days. We were very proud to see the hard work and talent that these individuals have put into their service. The Starkville Habitat for Humanity organization would like to send a big thank you to the MSU Volunteer Center for giving these awesome students the opportunity to work with us. As Dr. King once said “Everyone can be great because everybody can serve.” No matter where you are, service CAN be done.

CARES Act Tax Incentive

December 18, 2020 by Amanda Henry

This year, you can make a difference in our community by taking advantage of the tax incentives written into the CARES Act. Everyone can deduct the first $300 they donate, even if they take the standard deduction. Those who itemize deductions can give up to 100% of their adjusted gross income.  Both of these tax incentives are unique to this year and expire on December 31, 2020. Talk to your financial advisor about how this applies to you. Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity needs your contribution to continue providing homeownership opportunities to needy families. Help us build homes, communities, and hope.
