Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity has helped to build 47 houses.

Build #47: The 3rd Maroon Edition House, 2011- 70 Murdock Lane

The third Annual MSU Maroon Edition Habitat Home was started August 8th, 2011. This house is in the same subdivision, Sunset, as the previous two Maroon Edition houses. This home was be built largely by the volunteer hours of MSU students, faculty, and staff. A mother of three, who is employed in the Union on campus, is the recipient of this home. This kids are enjoying being able to ride their bikes and play outside in their own yard, which was previously not allowed in their apartmern complex.

#46 – 2011 Apostles’ House – 29 Greenwood Street

This Partner Family includes a father, mother, two sons, and a grand-daughter. The father has been working at the same place for 11 years and the mother, who is on oxygen part time and has some disability in her legs, is unable to work outside the home. One of the sons is also partially disabled. The family moved into their new home from a small, older 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment. They were crammed for space in their current situation and are happy they have better air to breathe without the mold problems they dealt with in their apartment.

#45 – 2011 Apostles’ House – 15 Greenwood Street

This house is next door to 29 Greenwood and they were built at the same time. These two houses were were both kicked off with our Collegiate Challenge volunteers and finished by local Starkville volunteers. The partner family for this house is a mother and father and two sons, ages 12 and 13. This family moved from a very small apartment where the kids were not even allowed to play outside. The new Habitat ome is a blessing for this family who were homeless for a time a fews years before they moved into their Habitat Home.

#44 – 2nd Maroon Edition House, 2010- 265 Greenwood Street

The second Annual MSU Maroon Edition Habitat Home was completed November 9th, 2010 at 265 Greenwood Street. This house is next door to the First Maroon Edition House. Hundreds of MSU students, faculty, staff, and alumni volunteered their time to help make this home a reality for a mother and her two sons. This home is fully handicap accessible, as the oldest child suffers from muscular dystrophy. The family is not only excited about a decent place to live and owning their own home, but also the life changing opportunity homeownership brings.

#43 – The 2010 Apostles’ House – 153 Bennett Drive

The partner family for this home is a working mother and father of eight children. They moved from a two bedroom apartment with one closet converted to a bedroom. The ten member family shared one bathroom. Their new Habitat home is a four bedroom, two bathroom house giving the family more space and better living conditions.

#42 – The First Maroon Edition House, 2009- 249 Greenwood Street

The Randle/Harvey Partner Family: The family selected for the first MSU Maroon Edition Habitat Home, is a mother and father of three children, ages 12, 10, 6. This family was living in a very small house in need of much repair. The family is not only excited about now having decent place to live and owning their own home, but also the life changing opportunity homeownership brings.

#41 – The 2009 Apostles’ House – 103 Henderson

A mother and five children, ages 17, 14, 13, 10, and 5 were selected as the partner family for this home. This family moved into their Habitat home from a small, crowded apartment needing much repair. Due to safety concerns, the children were not allowed outside the home to play. The excitement homeownership brings to this family was clearly seen as the family worked along side volunteers to help build their new Habitat home. This family views homeownership as a life changing opportunity that will impact not only this family, but future generations.

#39 – First United Methodist Church Habitat Home, 2008- 320 Apple Street

The First United Methodist Church, Starkville, Mississippi selected Habitat for Humanity as their 2008 local mission project, sponsoring the building of the 320 Apple Street Home. 

A mother and four children (ages 14, 9, 4, and 6) is the partner family for this home. One child is facing heart surgery and another child is seriously allergic to many foods and allergens. In addition to meeting the special needs of ill children, the mother is employed full-time. The family is currently living in public housing and views homeownership as a life changing opportunity.
 

#38 – The 2008 Apostles’ House – 322 Apple Street

This Partner Family includes a working mother with two children of her own (ages 14 and 10), and two children (ages 14 and 9) she is raising for her deceased sister. The family is currently living in a crowded trailer, needing much repair. This family is not only excited about owning their own home, but also the new opportunity in life homeownership brings to the entire family.
