What is Habitat?
Habitat for Humanity is a Christian ministry providing training and support to empower families in breaking the cycle of poverty through ownership of a decent home. Â Starkville Habitat for Humanity is an United Way Agency.
Habitat forms partnerships with low-income families to build simple homes that they then purchase on a no-profit, no-interest basis.
Through volunteers, donations, and other support, Habitat brings a diverse community together in support of a family in need.

How can a Habitat home help a family?
While the main focus of Habitat is the elimination of inadequate housing, a secondary focus is one of breaking the cycle of poverty. Studies show that poverty begets poverty and that if parents or grandparents can buy their own home, then the pride and self-esteem associated with this purchase can be passed on to the children. In addition, it has been found that children of Habitat homeowners score higher on achievement tests and lower in an index of behavorial problems than children from similar backgrounds still living in inadequate housing.
